While working for the U.S. Department of Immigration in Minnesota, I saw a great need for someone to provide a national resource for collecting and transmitting fingerprints. As more corporations and agencies develop their own security programs, it’s critical for them to have a resource that can navigate and expedite the process.

(LEGACY -- DO NOT USE) My Challenges

My successes.

Originally she had been able to hold down a teaching job and run her company simultaneously. Shelater dropped the teaching to put all her time into the business. There have been many clients but Joanne Fisher of Weber Shandwick, a public relations firm, probably sums up her market niche the best. She states "What appealed to me was the mobile service portion. She has everything with her, sets up in a conference room and takes over. You can tell that she knows what she is doing."  Her success was documented by Todd Nelson, freelance writer for the Star Tribune in a Sept 24, 2007 article.

What have you learned from your experiences as a business owner?

Unfortunately, I didn’t know much about setting up a business. I needed help setting up the legal structure, coming up with a business plan, creating a website, and getting financing for expanding nationwide.

How SCORE helped.

The mentors at SCORE helped me get through so many of the start-up problems of getting a business off the ground and launching a national network of registered and qualified professionals. They helped me make the hard decisions and build a successful business. SCORE was a great resource for me.

What's great about my mentor?

When she realized she knew nothing about starting a business, she sought business counseling at SCORE Minneapolis. Her team was Virgil Dissmeyer and Bill Richardson. They were a perfect match since Dissmeyer had worked in the service industry and Richardson had worked in the manufacturing sector. She says, "What one doesn't think of, the other one will." If they didn't know the answer, they would find someone in the chapter who could.
