Squatty Potty was born when Bobby Edwards designed a product that helped his mother address a health issue more comfortably. Backed by extensive research and an eye for design, the Edwards family launched Squatty Potty production with limited resources. The original Squatty Potty stool saw brisk sales of three to five units per day, due in part to widespread increasing interest in digestive health.

After creating a sales and marketing plan with their SCORE mentor, the Edwards team saw a rapid uptick in sales, and grew to ship more than 200 units each day. Since first being featured by SCORE, the Squatty Potty team has appeared on ABC's Shark Tank and now supplies product to every Bed, Bath, & Beyond store in the United States.

The Squatty Potty product line has also expanded to include a variety of stool models and styles to satisfy wide-ranging customer decor preferences. 

My successes. 

After just over a year, the company moved from a home-based business, run out of the Edwards' garage, to a fully operational office and warehouse. The family was able to expand by hiring more full time employees. From the fourth quarter of 2011, when the business started, to the fourth quarter of 2012, Squatty Potty saw daily sales grow by 4,000 percent — very impressive growth for a first-year business built from the ground up.

How SCORE helped. 

The owners of Squatty Potty, Bobby Edwards and his parents Bill and Judy, came to SCORE in early 2012 after deciding to go into business. Squatty Potty had faced a variety of logistical, marketing, and online sales issues during startup. SCORE mentor Joe Stambaugh quickly helped the family figure out ways to improve these aspects of Squatty Potty, and the business instantly began to improve.

Mentor Paul Campbell assisted Stambaugh by helping the Edwards family determine how to secure necessary capital options when needed. Within their first year of working with SCORE, Squatty Potty moved from the Edwards' home garage to a 10,000 square-foot warehouse that allowed the business to increase its workforce by 400 percent in 2012.
